Many presentations and publications explain how to run SAP projects in a process-centric manner; the mechanics of doing so are quite well known, even if not always followed. The critical element often missing is a clear and shared understanding of why you should run an SAP implementation project in a process-centric manner.
A variety of approaches have been developed by SAP and its implementation partners to reduce risks and improve the quality and speed of SAP implementations. However successful an implementation is from a project and technical perspective, true business success can only be measured post-delivery, based on the solution’s impact over time, using business impact metrics such as the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and Return-On-Investment (ROI).
TCO can only be calculated when all project and ongoing costs are known for the solution 'As Delivered', not just 'As Designed'. ROI can only come from measurable and realised business benefits such as improved customer satisfaction and internal efficiency. New software will change the way processes are executed, but these business measures cannot be proven without detailed knowledge of the operation and performance of those processes both before and after the change.
