Measuring for the sake of measuring can create vast wasteful activity, defeating the objectives it was originally intended to address, increasing costs, and reducing value to customers and other stakeholders. If no structured framework on which to bring these measures and their methods together is designed and adopted, then the overall purpose for measuring in the first place is lost, at least in the main—and this adds to this wasteland.

This paper discusses:

  • Enterprise-wide measurement frameworks
  • Performance comparison approaches
  • Selecting the right metrics useful for management
  • Implemeting and continously managing measurement
